Debrecen (75 km – 60′ by car from Lake Tisza Holiday Homes) is the second largest city of Hungary. The town is located in the east of the country, in the Great Hungarian Plain (Alfold). It is the capital of Hajdú-Bihar county.
Debrecen received city rights in 1361. In 1849, during the Hungarian independence struggle against the Austrian Habsburg emperor, the city was temporary capital of Hungary.
In Debrecen, the University of Debrecen (Debreceni Egyetem, DE) and the Reformed Theological College (DRHE) are established. The city is considered the spiritual center of the Hungarian Reformed Church. A statue of the dutch Admiral Michiel de Ruyter in the center recalls that he freed – in 1676 – twenty-six Hungarian reformed pastors from slavery, when they were condemned to the galleys by the Austrian emperor.
The city has two medicinal baths. The Reformed Church of Debrecen has 3,000 seats and is one of the largest churches in the country.
